The Affero project (being the coolest non-profit in the world), is giving away  TWO pairs of custom Affero Toms Shoes! One of a kind…. you can’t get anywhere else in the world.

At the end of this month we have a goal to be giving away $1200 a month. As of today we’re currently giving $770 to the categories YOU vote on. We have over 100 people giving every month, our largest donor gives $100 and our smallest $1. It’s something we ALL can do… and we don’t just support one organization, but 12!! :)

So we need you help to increase our monthly giving to $1200 :)

Shoes and Worms?

Early last year I was in Kenya visiting schools in remote regions of the countryside, its one of my favorite things to do when Im in Africa. I love the sound of kids laughing and watching kids point at the “muzungu with the guitar on his back”, as I visit and teach the kids songs from my land ‘downunder’. Great times! But, as I was singing in this little village school, with no windows or chalkboard, dancing with these happy kids, the reality sunk in that these school kids had no shoes! None of them.

I later learned that because these kids had no shoes, the CDC and other Non-Government Organizations had to come through every 6 months with worm medicine to de-worm the kids (if the family had money), did you know?

  • 400 million children are infected or at risk of being infected with “soil-transmitted helminths” – worms in the soil that can enter the body through the soles of bare feet.
  • An additional 200 million people worldwide (adults and children) are infected with schistosomiasis, which comes from another type of worm – shoes can play a big prevention role with “schisto”, too.
  • If a child has enough worms in her body, they will stunt her physical growth, make her more susceptible to other infections, and even cause permanent cognitive damage – that’s a lower IQ, just because of worms!
  • Children with worms also suffer from lower school attendance.

So today’s challenge is to do something about this. I have listed 3 things you can do to help combat this epic problem. Lets commit to doing one of these this week and you just might save the life of a child.

1) Visit www.soles4souls.org and donate a pair of your shoes – easy!

2) Go buy a pair of shoes from Toms Shoes. For every pair bought, Toms gives a pair away to children in need around the world.

3) Visit www.donateyouroldshoes.org – these guys will take your old shoes and make great use of them.

Terms of Service/Privacy Policy

1. The Affero Project respects the privacy of all who visit our web site, will not rent or sell your personal information to third parties.

2. The Affero Project collects only that information that you voluntarily provide on our forms. Where visitors do provide such information we will only use it for the purpose of this campaign, and will only reveal contact information or use quotations in a public context only after having obtained specific permission.

3. The Affero Project does track various site statistics and retains aggregate data that may be used or displayed on the site. We never look at the specific usage of our website by identifiable individuals. We retain the right to record and display anonymous geographical, demographic and giving statistics where appropriate.

4. Donors who join the program, give by credit card and visitors that send us contact information are added to our general distribution mailing list and may be sent monthly or periodic updates about the work of Affero and reminders to vote each month. All our members may opt-out of this at any time.

5. Transactional Security: The personal information collected when you make a contribution or purchase items by credit card is kept for the purposes of tracking your order and to provide a receipt of the transaction. This information is stored on an encrypted, secure server managed by a third-party commercial credit card processing institution.

6. By entering your credit/debit card information in your Affero Project profile on our website, or on an Affero Project signup form at a concert or event, you are authorizing The Affero Project to automatically withdraw your sponsorship amount from your credit/debit card account on the first of every month. Charging your card online saves us the expense of processing payments through the mail and allows more funds to be given.

7. The Affero Project is not responsible for the content of external Internet sites that may be linked to/from this site.

8. The Affero Project retains the right to cancel and/or delete a profile at any time for misuse of the website, profile or tampering with the community functions. This can be done at Affero’s discretion and without prior warning. In the case a profile is cancelled, all recurring payments attached to that account will be also immediately be cancelled.

9. The Affero Project may update or modify this Privacy Policy from time to time. If any changes are made, Affero will reflect the date on which any such changes are made and posted by updating the "last updated" date at the top of the page. Please be sure to check this page periodically for changes. This Privacy Policy was last changed and posted on our Website on February 8, 2010.
