A Closer Look

| Location: | Ogur and Abako sub-counties, in the war-torn northern district of Lira in Uganda. |
| Demographic: | Men, women and children of all ages. |
| Project Funding: | $77,000 – for building 14 water wells in Uganda. |
For many years, the people of northern Uganda suffered from violent conflicts between rebel groups such as the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and government forces. The violence forced the people to flee to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. Now, with peace prevailing at long last, communities are focusing on rebuilding. Decades of war have destroyed basic infrastructure, disrupted traditional farming practices, and led to crippling dependence on emergency food aid. The violence also left deep emotional wounds and a government unable to meet basic needs.
In cooperation with an experienced in-country partner, Lifewater is responding to the needs of two sub-counties, Ogur and Abako, in the northern district of Lira. In Ogur, water coverage is reported at 48 percent, with 9 percent of sources (primarily hand pumps) not functioning. Just 38 percent of the population has adequate sanitation coverage, defined as access to a latrine. In Abako, the situation is even more dire, with water coverage estimated at 56 percent and at least 19 percent of those sources not functioning.
Lifewater’s project in the war torn region of northern Uganda will benefit more than 7,000 people in the Abako and Ogur sub counties by drilling 14 shallow water wells. Our projects are sustainable because we believe in empowering local communities with knowledge and skills in water well drilling, operation and maintenance, hand pump repair, and participatory water, sanitation and hygiene education (WASH) training methods. (Each well costs $5,500)
